The Fields Medal and the Abel Prize are the two most important international prizes in mathematics

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters will announce the winner of the Abel Prize 2022, a top honor in the field of mathematics, today at approximately 4:30 PM IST.

The Abel Prize is named after the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel. The award was established in 2002 on the occasion of his 200th birthday.

The Fields Medal and the Abel Prize are the two major international prizes in mathematics. While the Fields Medal honors the brilliant work done by a mathematician under the age of 40, the Abel Prize has no age limit and is more of a lifetime achievement award honoring significant contributions made to an area of mathematics.

The first Abel Prize, awarded in 2003, went to the French mathematician Jean-Pierre Serre. The only person of Indian descent to have won this award is Srinivasa SR Varadhan. He is affiliated with the Courant Institute, New York University, and won the prize in 2007. Until now, the prize has gone to only one female mathematician, Karen Keskulla Uhlenbeck of the University of Texas, USA.

The prize consists of an award and a prize money of 7.5 million Norwegian kroner.

Norwegian Ramanujan

A short film about the tragic story of mathematician Niels Henrik Abel is available on the Abel Prize website. Indian math lovers will see the parallel with Ramanujan’s life.

Abel was a young genius who, when he was only 22, demonstrated the insolubility of the quintic equation, which had puzzled mathematicians for 250 years. In 1826 he presented an important thesis in Paris; but the manuscript was misplaced. While trying to divert his lost treatise, he contracted tuberculosis and died three years later on April 6, 1829, when he was only 26 years old. The Paris treatise was discovered just two days after his death. Now his discovery forms the mathematical basis for the CT scan. His work is also used today in ECC cryptography, used to encrypt data online.
