Congress on Saturday announced a three-phase campaign, “Mehngai-Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan”, against price hikes, including organizing rallies and marches across the country from March 31 to April 7.

The announcement came after Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s meeting with party secretaries and heads of state, where the party discussed its membership drive and also discussed its programs going forward, especially after its recent dismal performance in five parliamentary elections.

The party demands a curbing of the rise in fuel prices and cooking gas. Speaking at a press conference, the party’s secretary general (Communications) said that the people of India have been betrayed, deceived and deceived by Modi’s government. “For 137 days, the government kept the price of gasoline, diesel, LPG cylinder, pipeline natural gas and CNG unchanged to win votes in the five parliamentary elections. And now that the elections are over, the government is slowly raising prices every day,” said Mr Surjewala.

Petrol and diesel prices have risen by ₹3.20 per liter in the past five days. Mr Surjewala pointed out that over the past eight years, the BJP government has increased the excise tax on petrol by EUR 18.70 per liter and on diesel by EUR 18.34 per liter. He also lashed out at the ruling government for drastically cutting the subsidy. Citing statistics from Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), the Congress-led UPA government issued a subsidy of ₹1.42,000 crore on petrol, diesel and LPG in 2011-12. This amount has fallen to ₹11,729 crores in 2020-21.

The three-stage agitation will begin on March 31. The party has ordered its workers to protest outside their homes and public places. He said people will decorate LPG cylinders, beat drums and ring bells to highlight the problem of inflation and to draw the attention of the “deaf BJP government” against the insurmountable rise in cooking gas prices, petrol and diesel.

From April 2 to April 4, the congress, along with NGOs, religious, social organizations and local welfare agencies, will organize dharnas and marches at the district level across the country, he said.

On April 7, the “Mehngai-Mukt Bharat” party will organize dharnas and marches in all state headquarters with the help of social and religious organizations, NGOs and people, Mr Surjewala said.
