Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson played in the Indian Premier League for nine years, right on this date in 2013 when the Kerala batter was awarded his first IPL cap. Samson has had an indifferent run in the IPL as lead batter and now captain.

Sanju Samson took over from Australian batter Steve Smith to captain Rajasthan for IPL 2021. However, the Kerala striker was unable to reverse the team’s fate as they finished second from the latter in 2021 after a series injuries. Rajasthan last qualified for the playoffs in 2018, after which they finished 7th, 8th and 7th.

Rajasthan Royals looked like the team to beat in IPL 2022, as the Sanju Samson-led side faced the Gujarat Titans after a thrilling 3-run win over Lucknow Super Giants. RR successfully defended 165 after stunning spells from Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Sen, who defended 15 runs against Marcus Stoinis in the final. RR’s decision to also retire R Ashwin caught the eye after Shimron Hetmyer’s attack.

RR kicked off the IPL 2022 campaign with a convincing 61-run win over SunRisers Hyderabad and then they defeated five-time champions Mumbai Indians. However, they lost their third game to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Earlier on Thursday, Sanju Samson won his first toss in IPL 2022, opting to bowl first against Gujarat Titans.

“We would like to bowl here first. We did a very good job winning the match with dew condition and losing the toss, but I would like to use the conditions. Yesterday Trent Boult had a small problem and is not available for the game today. Jimmy Neesham is replacing him,” Samson said during the toss ceremony.
