England struggled to crack the test code despite becoming one of the best white-ball sides in world cricket. Before Joe Root stepped down earlier this year, England had won just 2 Tests in a 17-game stage. After England lost to the Ashes and lost to the West Indies in the West Indies, large-scale changes were made to the leadership group and coaching staff, with Stokes replacing Root as captain and Chris Silverwood being sacked from the role.Since Stokes teamed up with Silverwood’s successor, Brendon McCullum, England have played a refreshingly aggressive brand of cricket that has helped them achieve the right results. England have adopted the much-discussed ‘Bazball’ approach, beating defending Test champions New Zealand 3-0, India in a rescheduled Test and South Africa 2-1 at home.“It was incredible, great fun to be a part of, great fun playing the style of cricket we have, and also getting back to ways to win,” Root told Sky Sports afterwards. England’s 9-wicket victory in the London Test against South Africa on Monday.Root said the atmosphere in the dressing room was calm and Stokes stood out with his clear message as the Test captain in the new line-up.”I’m really happy for him [Stokes]. He’s been great. He has stimulated the team very well, has been very clear with his messages. He is leading by example on the pitch,” added Root.Stokes has started his full-time stint as test captain with an impressive record and Root said the all-rounder has eased himself into the difficult role.“He has led in every way this summer. It was a real pleasure to see him go into that position like a duck to water,” Root added.— ENDS —
