Pat Cummins was at his best with the bat during the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) IPL 2022 match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. The right-hander equaled KL Rahul in batting with the fastest fifty in Indian Premier League (IPL) history at just 14 balls.
After batting for KKR and taking 61 runs off 41 balls, Cummins threw it all to the kitchen table to score an unbeaten 15-ball 56, laced with four fours and six sixes. After his late charge, the Men in Gold and Purple chased 162 with four overs to go.
Cummins was also named Player of the Match for a masterful knockout under pressure against the five-time IPL champions. After KKR’s thumping five-wicket win, Venkatesh Iyer and Cummins had a friendly chat as they talked about the strokes they played.
Iyer praised Cummins for his match-winning shot and asked, “What’s the secret behind this incredible shot of yours?”
Cummins, 28, said he doesn’t mind playing ambitious and air strikes when the ball is in his zone.
“I don’t know, you guys do the hard work up front. So when I come in I just try to hit big sixes, try to think clearly. Between my area I just go for it. not my area, I’ll just try a Like I said, when I’m batting at the end of the game, it doesn’t swing, so it’s a little bit easier for me,” Cummins said.
Aside from playing the astonishing knock, Cummins also got the two important wickets from Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav.
Venkatesh Iyer on playing the role of the anchor against MI
Iyer also played a pivotal role in KKR’s win over MI after hitting 50 off 41 balls with six fours and a six. The southpaw felt the field wasn’t as easy to hit as Cummins made it seem.
“Felt really good. Except for you, everyone thought the wicket was a little tricky to save. But that was an incredible demonstration of hitting for me. It was very important for me to try and stay until the end, that anchor role,” Iyer said.
