MI vs LSG: Rohit Sharma’s dismal form concern for 5-time champions Mumbai Indians

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians got off to a disastrous start in IPL 2022 as the five-time record-breaking champions are still looking for their first win of the season as they languish at the bottom of the table but have yet to open their account after five games.

It’s certainly not Rohit Sharma’s skipper’s fault that the five-time champions messed up at the auction table with underpowered domestic acquisitions. But the lack of runs from Rohit Sharma ‘the batter’— 3rd highest run-getter in IPL— certainly hurts the Mumbai Indians in the current edition.

Rohit Sharma has gotten those starts but the MI captain has failed to convert them into big scores in the last five games. It seems the opposition teams have come up with a plan against the MI captain — trap him before he sets the tone for the five-time champion.

The senior batter has managed to score just 108 runs in 5 IPL 2022 games at a below average of 21.60, which sounds alarming to both him and his franchise. One of the reasons he didn’t show up with the bat is his touch which isn’t misplaced, but he may need to limit a few shots and hit deep along with his team’s in-form batters.

Earlier, in the IPL 2022, Rohit joined his Indian teammate and RCB star Virat Kohli as the only 2nd Indian batter to reach the 1000 run. The Mumbai skipper has scored 3,313 runs in T20I cricket and holds the record for most runs scored in the shortest format at an international level.

However, MI coach Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene is backing his captain to play a big blow in the upcoming IPL games.

“If you look at the way he starts, the way he hits the ball, it’s brilliant. He times it, he gets some really, really good starts. Yeah, he’s disappointed too, he can’t convert them .” said Jayawardene.

“We’ve seen Rohit hit deep, hit 14-15 overs and get those big scores. It’s just a matter of time. He’s a quality player and I’m not worried about form as such.”

ROHIT WITHOUT CAPTAIN?

Former Native American batter Sanjay Manjrekar believes Rohit’s bat form can improve in the IPL if he plays without the added responsibility of being the captain.

“I feel Pollard is still adding value. (Before the season) I even had a feeling that Rohit Sharma would leave the captaincy as Virat Kohli, relax a little, play as a pure batter and hand over the responsibility to Pollard, who is a brilliant international captain,” said Manjrekar. ESPNCricinfo.

“His record has been like this for the past 3-4 seasons, average less than 30, pass rate not 150 or 160. When he plays for India his grades get better… because then he only thinks about himself and less about the team” Manjrekar said.

“When he plays IPL he tries to play the anchor role which is similar to what KL Rahul did with Punjab Kings and Hardik Pandya in the last match. When he plays free we will see the Rohit Sharma we see in Indian cricket, Manjrekar added.

Against Lucknow Super Giants in the afternoon heat of Mumbai, Rohit should put his best foot forward to tame Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya, Ayush Badoni and return to winning ways in IPL 2022.
