Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan revealed that newly appointed captain Ravindra Jadeja told him that MS Dhoni had hinted last season that he wanted to leave the captain’s armband and that the Indian all-rounder should take on more responsibilities.

Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain on Wednesday and passed the baton to Ravindra Jadeja, who will lead the four-time champion’s IPL 2022 title defense from March 26 in Mumbai.

CSK’s social media team posted a video on Saturday, in which CEO Kasi Vishwanathan was seen speaking about Dhoni’s decision to leave the CSK captaincy. CSK CEO said he was surprised at MS Dhoni’s sudden resignation of the captaincy, but added that whatever decision the legendary wicket-keeper makes is in the best interests of the franchise.

“When I heard the news I was a bit surprised. I didn’t expect this to come from MS at this point. That’s my personal opinion. The fact is that whatever MS does, as far as CSK is concerned, he will do it in the importance of the franchise. He is one of the most important players, a captain, a wicketkeeper, an all rounder for CSK I think whatever he does whatever decision he makes will be the right decision for CSK because I know that he puts CSK’s interests first,” Viswanathan said on CSK’s YouTube channel.

“I spoke to Jaddu in the evening when we went to practice. He told me that last year after IPL, MS had indicated to him that he should take on more responsibilities. He had also indicated that at some point he (Jadeja) Maybe he should taking the baton as captain. The fact that Dhoni will play alongside him in the matches will also be helpful for Jaddu (Jadeja) to get the input from MS. It should be a big help,” Viswanathan added. †

The CSK released a statement saying that Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond. “MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and has chosen Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will be only the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond,” CSK said.
