Shreyas Iyer falls short of making Brendon McCullum’s IPL prediction come true 14 years after historic hundred

It has been 14 years since a batter from Kolkata Knight Riders scored a hundred in the IPL. Brendon McCullum, who is currently the coach of the two-time champion, remains the only man to have crossed the three-digit mark in KKR colors.

On April 18, 2008, McCullum had given the world a taste of what was to come in the IPL with a stunning knockout for KKR against RCB in the first-ever match in the IPL. McCullum crushed 158 from just 73 balls, 13 sixes and 10 boundaries. The tight boundaries at M Chinnaswamy Stadium weren’t big enough as McCullum continued to send them over the ropes, shooting KKR to 222/3 in 20 overs.

When asked about the hundred droughts for KKR herds on the 14th anniversary of his special battle, McCullum said he had a feeling one of his guys would break the unwanted streak on Monday as the Knight Riders chased a massive total of 218 against Rajasthan Royals.

McCullum, speaking to broadcasters during RR’s innings on Monday, said: “Funny to say that Bish, I said it to David Hussey on the way to the ground tonight. “Huss, I think one of our guys tonight a hundred gets. I just feel like something special is going to happen here with one of our guys.”

Jos Buttler’s 2nd IPL 2022 hundred gave the Royals a whopping total of 217 which they successfully defended.

However, KKR did not go down without a fight. Shreyas Iyer got close to Brendon McCullum when he hit 85 from just 51 balls. The new KKR skipper bagged a 107-run score with Aaron Finch, even as the Australian opener set the tone for their pursuit after losing Sunil Narine for 0 to a run-out.

Iyer carried on after Finch’s exit for 58 (28 balls) in the 9th over and brought the comparison down to 40 in 4 overs. Just when it looked like Iyer would lead KKR to a win, Yuzvendra Chahal took 4 wickets, including a hat-trick in the 17th over, to dent KKR’s hopes.

Iyer, who looked poised to make the 3-digit score, was eliminated from LBW after missing a quicker delivery from Chahal, who shone with figures of 5/40. KKR eventually fell 7 runs behind the total and slipped to their 3rd consecutive defeat in IPL 2022.
