Trucking simulator shelves Russia-themed expansion after Ukraine invasion

Euro Truck Simulator 2 has shelved an upcoming Russia-themed expansion pack following the country’s invasion of Ukraine, its developer SCS Software has announced:† In a blog post, the Czech-based developer said it has announced the impending release of the Heart of Russia DLC pack “so that it is in no way seen as supporting or tolerant of the aggression.”

Euro Truck Simulator 2 has become a cult hit since its release in 2012, with the developer supporting it in the years since with over half a dozen major chunks of DLC. These packs have expanded the game’s map and added new lands for players to drive through. When it was officially announced in March 2021SCS said the Heart of Russia expansion would not allow players to drive across the country, but was intended to reach the “upper Volga River”. Limited parts of Russia are already available to drive through in the game thanks to the previous Beyond the Baltic Sea extension.

According to the developer, the Heart of Russia expansion was about six to eight weeks away from completion on February 24 when the invasion began. Initially, the company says it contributed to humanitarian aid charities, and later donated all proceeds from the sale of its products. Ukrainian Paint Jobs Pack DLC, which has now sold over 85,000 copies. But in the end, it had to make a decision about the map expansion DLC itself.

“When developing our games, we try to be as apolitical as possible, in a way that shields the global player audience from everyday controversies,” the developer wrote. “We really like that our shared passion, for a truck simulation, allows people to connect, virtually visit a neighboring country in peace, and enjoy a hobby we have in common, rather than something divisive to sow. us apart. But since our DLC, Heart of Russiarelates directly to Russia, and with so many people suffering, we have decided not to release the DLC.”

The SCS blog post leaves the door open for the DLC to be released some day in the future. “When the time comes for Ukraine to rebuild and heal, we will try to find a way for our Heart of Russia DLC to play any role in that healing process, for everyone,” it writes.
